In episode 3, Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) saves Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) from the wild boar during the family hunt, making Hae-in feel love towards Hyun-woo. She thought something was wrong because she was terminally ill. We also get an insight into Yoon Eun-sung and his uncomfortable personality. It becomes clear that Eun-sung is trying to vy for Hae-in’s attention with his connections and power but it seems as though he may be hiding something sinister and dark within him.
Through a series of misunderstandings caused by Hyun-woo’s sister, Hyun-woo tries to rectify her mistake by deleting the messages on her phone. When she comes home drunk with Yoon Eun-sung, Hyun-woo tries to take away the phone but she pulls him for a kiss instead, surprising him.
Queen of Tears (눈물의 여왕) is the new romantic comedy that will begin airing on 9th March 2024 on tvN as well as on Netflix in selected regions. The 16-episode series stars the popular and talented actors, Kim Soo-hyun as Baek Hyun-woo and Kim Ji-won as Hong Hae-in, along with Na Young-hee, Jung Jin-young, Kwak Dong-yeon, Park Sung-hoon, Kim Jung-nan and others.
The romantic drama is written by Park Ji-eun, the mastermind behind popular dramas like Crash Landing On You, My Love From the Stars and The Producers and directed by Jang Young-woo as well as Kim Hee-won.
Episode 4 continues with their kiss and while Hyun-woo remains surprised at Hae-in’s actions, the latter feels embarrassed later on. Hyun-woo tries to get her phone by conversing with her but she goes into her room. As she takes a shower, he enters her room and takes her phone. He is unable to use the right password but the number ‘1031’ gets him access. Shocked at the revelation, he shakes it off and deletes the message.
Hae-in walks in as Hyun-woo tries to leave the room, so he makes an excuse for being in her room. When she agrees to spend time with him, he makes an excuse and walks out – making Hae-in feel as though he is nervous and cares too much for her.
Hyun-woo is seen reminiscing the memory attached to ‘1031’. Turns out, a couple of years ago, they were expecting a baby and the delivery date was October 31st. They were excited to welcome the baby and went all out for it. But cut to the present, the room is now occupied by Hyun-woo and the only remnant of the memory is the one glow-in-the-dark star sticker in the room. This also shows that they lost the child and it is one of the reasons behind their cold behaviour towards each other.
The next day, Hyun-woo begins feeling differently about Hae-in and even gets his heart racing while being close to her or seeing her dressed up but he remains in denial. From skipping and humming because of her compliment to smiling at her excited expression – it is obvious to the viewers and the people around him that he is smitten.
Yoon Eun-sung comes into the picture, creating a green monster inside Hyun-woo as the former spends time with Hae-in. While Hae-in is unbeknownst to his intentions, Hyun-woo feels that he is creepy and that something isn’t right about him. Eun-sung helped Hae-in convince Mr. Hermann to open a Hercyna store in her mall with a thinly veiled threat regarding his mistress.
In the evening, Hyun-woo comes back after meeting his friend for a drink and brings her her favourite snacks. She smiles at the sweet gesture and tells him that she has great news – she has found a way to be cured of her illness and there is a 50 per cent chance of her being alright. This leads him to go into a spiral of being with her for the rest of his life and what all it entails. He also thinks of the situation where he tells her about the divorce and even that does not go well for him.
On the other hand, Eun-sung joins hands with Grace Goh to bring down Queens group through systematic manipulation. Grace Goh uses her skills to create fire within Hae-in’s mother by telling her that Hae-in is stopping Soo-cheol from moving ahead in his career to inherit Queens Group. Eun-sung and the others use the directors of the group to buy and sell stocks as well as accusing the Chairman of siphoning funds.
Hae-in’s mother confronts her for allegedly taking down her brother to reach the top. While Hae-in tries to argue, she feels dizzy and almost falls but Hyun-woo comes to save her in time. He takes her to the room and advises her to tell her family. She opens up and says that she doesn’t want to shock her parents – after all, they have already lost one child. But she remains optimistic that she will be alright and they can put all of it behind.
Later, Hyun-woo’s father gets to know that he may be losing the village elections because of his rival. Saddened by his odds, Hyun-woo’s sister texts Hae-in about the situation, hoping she will arrive to help and she does! Like a star, she enters the village centre with rows of trucks, loaded with gifts. Stunned at her beauty, grace and ability, the Baek family feel happy at her gesture.
Hyun-woo is told by his mother about Hae-in’s grand gesture and he goes to his hometown to see what she is up to. Hae-in, on the other hand, explores his room and finds a pink iPod. Listening to the music, she gets lost in the happy memories. When approached by a child regarding her car, she asks her driver to take him around in it. While she looks around, she loses track of everything and gets lost.
Worried about her, Hyun-woo looks around for her till sunset. He finds her near a field and shouts at her out of concern. To remain stoic, she tries to brush off the incident and Hyun-woo walks away angrily. Seeing him covered in sweat, she breaks and tells him the truth. She reveals that she is scared of how the condition does not let her remember anything and she does not want it to overpower her.
The episode ends with Hyun-woo getting overwhelmed by many emotions, running and hugging her tight. The two share a warm and emotional embrace as they cry their hearts out.
The epilogue gives a surprise – it seems Hyun-woo and Hae-in met as high schoolers! A young Hyun-woo entered a high school in Seoul while Hae-in was leaving the school to go to the US. The students whispered behind her back, saying that she was going to a mental institution – making her feel worse than she already did. As she walked across the field listening to music, she fell and scraped her knee. At that time, Hyun-woo came to her rescue and bandaged her knee. Overwhelmed at the caring attitude of a stranger, she got up and ran away, leaving her pink iPod behind.
This is probably one of the best episodes so far. We are finally seeing some progress in the story, especially between the main leads. From Hyun-woo getting confused by his feelings for Hae-in to Hae-in melting at his caring actions. We also get an insight into their past as a married couple as well and why they are so cold to each other.
Yoon Eun-sung, on the other hand, is planning for revenge but the motivation remains unknown to the viewers. Park Sung-hoon has done an incredible job of showing Eun-sung’s mannerisms and the mask he puts on for Hae-in and her family. His storyline seems deeper than expected and we are looking forward to exploring that!
