Episode 7 of Doctor Slump begins with a flashback of Jeong-woo in elementary school. He was the only one who’s kidney bean refused to sprout in his class making him feel like a failure. Even though as a child, he tried to deny the fact that his failure was due to unforeseen circumstances, he felt dejected and helpless.
He tried his absolute best yet circumstances derailed all his efforts – the kidney bean, Ha-neul beating him at school and getting entangled in a medical negligence case. He says, “I hit rock bottom in the blink of an eye. And failure always went hand in hand with loneliness.”
The scene changes to Jeong-woo chasing the unknown man from the previous episode but soon loses him. Meanwhile, Ha-neul discovers the hidden spy cam under Jeong-woo’s bed. Bada, her brother, notices that it’s not an ordinary pen and that it’s a hidden camera. She calls Jeong-woo and asks him about his whereabouts.
Jeong-woo is at the police station. The detective tells him that they have lost the man. Jeong-woo realises that the burglar and the man are the same person. Ha-neul arrives at the police station and tells him about the hidden camera pen in his room. The pen is damaged due to water and the contents cannot be recovered.
While leaving the police station, Ha-neul realises that Jeong-woo is bleeding so they visit the hospital. The doctors give Jeong-woo a green light since the wound isn’t severe. However, Ha-neul breaks down as she empathises with Jeong-woo’s unfair circumstances and later, embarrassed, blames her breakdown to depression.
She proposes to watch a movie together when things settle down since she would “like to have some popcorn while sitting next to the person I like”.
The next day, Bin Dae-young is at the rooftop for a coffee break and meets Hong-ran who thanks him for letting her catch the dragonfly. Meanwhile, at Ha-neul’s house, Wol-seon is unable to find the iron and some of the food and side dishes are missing from the refrigerator. She blames Bada for stealing them since he had done so once before.
Ha-neul is the real culprit who brings the iron for Jeong-woo’s clothes and makes him eat a proper breakfast. They decide to meet outside to leave for the third court hearing together. On being questioned, Ha-neul flatly refuses any contact with the missing items leading to Bada becoming the collateral damage of her romance. She later bribes him to keep his mouth shut.
At the same time, Jeong-woo is waiting for Ha-neul outside but when Ha-neul arrives, Jeong-woo is nowhere to be found. She finds his phone lying on the street floor. She rushes to the court where 30 minutes have passed butJeong-woo’s attorney’s are unable to contact him. She is disappointed not to find him at court. Just when the attorney’s request for postponing the hearing, jeong-woo arrives with new evidence.
It’s revealed that the burglar was Kang Jin-suk who was trying to deliver Jeong-woo a crucial evidence. He was also the owner of the hidden cameras. It’s further revealed that he put the cameras to protect himself of false allegations as he had become a scapegoat of a medical accident leading to the death of the patient.
He had since then developed a habit of planting hidden cameras. In one of the cameras, two unknown men can be seen tampering with the IV, infusing anticoagulants in it.
It is further reveal at court that the culprit was the victim’s uncle. Her father had left her his entire fortune and in anger, his younger brother had planned the murder of the heiress. He is arrested and Jeong-woo is declared innocent.
Later, we find Jeong-woo staring at a distance with Ha-neul’s voice, “It took some time for Jeong-woo to recover. “He unnecessarily suffered too many losses. He needlessly had to suffer failure and disappointment. He didn’t know who to blame and felt lost for some time”. While Jeong-woo was suffering, everybody else was monetising his acquittal – advertisers, product companies, journalists, his former high school friends and even his parents.
After 3 days of Jeong-woo being alone, Ha-neul tries to come up with an excuse to water the cabbages on the roof to check on him. As she goes to the roof, she finds her family having a barbecue along with ginseng wine in order to entice Jeong-woo into coming outside.
Bada finally drags him out and they have dinner together. Wol-seon is particularly affectionate, although her affection is hidden beneath the garb of various kinds of adorable excuses.
Simultaneously, Bin Dae-young and Hong-ran meet at the convenience store. They later drink at a park while Dae-young tells her about her daughter. He further tells her that he plans to delete his Neo-tube which he started after watching Jeong-woo succeed.
It’s revealed that Dae-young and Jeong-woo were friends before having a fall out which is why he still cares about him. Hong-ran encourages him to call Jeong-woo which is picked by Wol-seon. She curses him thinking that he’s one of the people who left him at his worst. The entire exchange leads to Dae-young hilariously throwing a tantrum and blaming Hong-ran.
Meanwhile, Ha-neul’s family has become an alcohol induced wreck and so she suggests going for a walk. Jeong-woo later suggests to go drinking and reveals how discouraged and low he feels about his unfortunate and completely unnecessary misfortunes. He also confesses to Ha-neul multiple times, telling her how she’s been a drug to him, keeping him afloat.
The episode ends with Ha-neul’s reflections, “That day, Jeong-woo confessed his love several times more. And his words made my heart break because it told me how lonely he had been.”
This episode took an unexpected turn and for the better. The court case wrapped up quite soon which is unlike in many k-drama romcoms and is highly welcomed. It did not feel dragged and ended at the right time. The entire episode flowed smoothly and was a treat to watch!
This one focused on Jeong-woo and his forever loneliness. It also let the audience peep into his psyche. Despite working hard and being a top student, he has had his fair share of misfortunes, mostly those out of his control which made him feel helpless. On top of this, he did not have anyone who cared for him and cared about him.
Ha-neul and her family become the first people to show him unconditional care and affection. The episode also had some charming and hilarious moments. Wol-seon is an adorable mother and her exchanges are equally dramatic and amusing.
Bin Dae-young and Hong-ran’s arc is progressing and with Dae-young’s past being entangled with Jeong-woo’s, he might just become an unexpected ally and true friend to him.
