Amber Josephine Liu, known professionally as Amber, is an American rapper and singer. She was born in Los Angeles, California. In 2008, she auditioned for SM Entertainment's Los Angeles global audition 2008 and was selected to be part of the training program, moving to Seoul to pursue her singing career. After a year and a half of training, she debuted as a member of the South Korean girl group f(x) in September 2009.
From October 2011 to April 2012, she was part of the reality show "Invincible Youth" but had to leave the show to prepare for f(x)’s debut in Japan. She has hosted MBC's music show "Show Champion" for a year. She debuted as a solo artist in February 2015 with the release of her EP, "Beautiful".
In July 2018, she signed with Steel Wool Entertainment. The agency represents and promotes her in the United States through singing, acting, as well as directing videos. She also signed with United Talent Agency (UTA) to represent her worldwide activities the same year. On September 1, 2019, Amber announced her departure from SM Entertainment and confirmed that she would continue forward with her Steel Wool Entertainment contract.
