Recap Thailand Drama "The Miracle of Teddy Bear" Episode 1

The Miracle of Teddy Bear (คุณหมีปาฏิหาริย์) is a Thai romantic-drama-fantasy series directed by Paajaew Yuthana Lorphanpaibul and stars Sarin Ronnakiat, Thuchapon Koowongbundit, Thanapon Jarujitranon and Parada Chutchavalchotikul, alongside other cast members. The series has 15 episodes and The Miracle of Teddy Bear episode 1 has a runtime of 91 minutes.

The Miracle of Teddy Bear episode 1 starts as shockingly as one can expect, with Nut’s loving teddy bear turning into a human and that naked human running from the pet dog and falling from the balcony. You know, as is the norm in the household. A flashback sequence lets us know how this all came to be and we learn of Nut and the teddy bear’s close relationship. That’s not the weirdest part – it’s the teddy’s new friends in Nut’s new home. And yes, every item in his house is alive, with beady eyes.

I cannot unsee this.

The thing gets wilder as we are now again back from the flashback to Nut chasing his human teddy bear down the street. However, it seems like the place the teddy has decided to hide in has some significance to Nut as he looks at the shut down “Beloved” store with some pain. Either way, the chase continues, personally, for too long, until he runs the teddy down. For some reason, Nut’s mother really wants this random, unknown guy home to keep her company. But they go through the plan, weirdly.

The story goes back and forth a lot, and then next go back from the hospital to the night prior when Tofu the teddy bear helped Nut get into the house safely after coming home drunk. The next morning, the two somehow wake up naked cuddling each other. So, did they Nut sleep with the teddy bear who is now a human? I am a little confused with how things are happening in the series, but apparently, Nut’s mother thinks that her dead husband sent Tofu to keep her company. I have several questions, and most of them are about everyone’s sanity in this series.

I understand Nut’s frustration, but he starts screaming so aggressively at his mother for being naïve and probably for needing some psychiatric help. Either way, with some help from a pair of beady-eyed slippers, Tofu creates a further lasting impression in Nut’s mother’s life and she refuses to stop seeing Tofu even after she comes back home. Without a solution, Nut does as his mother wishes and brings this stranger home to stay with his elderly mother.

On the other hand, Nut’s friend/colleague Prib is unhealthily obsessed with Nut and doesn’t make it seem like a secret. It’s so bizarre. I don’t understand her being like this, like, she has absolutely no self-respect and constantly throws herself at Nut even though he is not interested in her because… he’s gay (or maybe bi, unclear about that for now)? Honestly, it borders on sexual harassment and is extremely uncomfortable to sit through.

When Nut finally realises that his precious teddy bear is no longer at home, he and his friends rush around to stop a garbage truck. Although Tofu tries to tell him the truth, it’s a wild thing to tell people, right? Either way, Nut starts keeping an eye on Tofu and his mom after installing cameras around his house. After some discussion with Gen, Nut remembers why he seems so familiar – he looks like a guy from his school, well, a popular basketball player, nonetheless.

 

He was Nut’s first love but Tofu, somehow, really irks him. After throwing him out of the room and asking him to sleep in the guest bedroom, Nut starts writing a piece on first love. Meanwhile, Tofu, bored and alone in the room, goes downstairs to talk to his new friends. They discuss how they woke up and Tofu remembers the comment that Nut had made about someone called Neung. He says that something must be connected to that name and that they must find out who that is.

The next morning, Nut again wakes up to find a naked Tofu in his bed. The latter seems extremely excited to have been able to spend the night with him.

Final Thoughts: The Miracle of Teddy Bear Episode 1

I am so confused. I am confused about the tone of the series and what we are watching in general. The series rapidly shifts from Nut screaming like a madman to Tofu looking at the camera and lovingly mentioning how he slept with Nut, among several other instances. The series goes off to an odd start, especially because the story in itself is just so odd and uncomfortable.

Not only does Nut scream at his mother extremely aggressively, which, in itself, made me extremely uncomfortable, Prib constantly trying to touch Nut without his consent is such a violation of his autonomy. Other than that, the storyline is a bit weirdly edited. Random things just happen all of a sudden and the constant back and forth becomes sort of whiplash.

Either way, I am interested to know whether the show gets any better, but the first episode doesn’t seem promising. I did not enjoy the comedy, and nor was the story clear enough. The point the series chose to laugh at shouldn’t be something we should be taking lightly and the beady-eyed house furniture will surely give me nightmares.
