Recap Korean Drama "Becoming Witch (2022)" Episode 2

Becoming Witch (The Witch is Alive / 마녀는 살아있다)is a mystery-comedy Korean drama series created by Kim Yun-chul and Park Pa-ran and starring Lee Yu-ri, Lee Min-young and Yoon So-yi. The TV Chosun series has 12 episodes total and Becoming Witch episode 2 has a runtime of 67 minutes.

Becoming Witch Episode 2 opens with three acts for our three main characters one after the other. We see Hee-so rushing to the hospital with her husband as her mother-in-law goes through a medical emergency at night. Ma-ri, who is convinced her husband is having an affair, tries to hit him but, ends up throwing up on his face and, Jin-a experiences a bad nightmare, waking up screaming in the morning.

As the next day begins, Ma-ri and her husband get into a quarrel and, ultimately the former throws the news of divorcing him at his face. We see Hee-so visiting her mother-in-law the next day and while taking care of her, her mother-in-law pulls her in and says something that completely breaks her down. Meanwhile, Jin-a is seen at the clinic to get premium liposuction.

Drama keeps knocking at Ma-ri’s door as she thinks she witnesses a case of domestic abuse while peering into her neighbour’s apartment and attempts to save the wife from the husband. The two run and end up in a cafe where Go-eun, the neighbour introduces herself and proclaims her crush on Ma-ri’s husband. An agitated Ma-ri tries to demean her and her husband in the most hilarious way, only to realize Go-eun is aware of Ma-ri being the wife of Lee Nak-goo.

After Ma-ri drops Go-eun off to her building and heads home, she stalks Go-eun’s Instagram profile to get some information about her. Meanwhile, Lee Nak-goo meets a business partner at the hotel and during their conversation, recalls how un-adjusting Ma-ri is. As Ma-ri stalks Go-eun’s profile, she comes across her most recent post and is shocked. In the backdrop, we get to see Lee Nak-goo with a woman clicking pictures in a hotel room while the new picture on Go-eun’s account gets posted.

Hee-so heads back home after taking care of her mother-in-law. It is not revealed what her mother-in-law has whispered into her ears at the hospital but, we do get to see Hee-so breaking down tragically when she looks at the old pictures of her and her husband when she was first pregnant. When Hee-so’s husband gets back home, he realizes Hee-so condition but, is indifferent towards her.

At Jin-a’s place, she initially feels unsafe when the locksmith comes to change her locks but, soon enough develops a crush on him. Ma-ri ends up meeting her mother later in the episode and comes across a dump of old memories at her mother’s house. In a flashback, we see Ma-ri, Hee-so and Jin-a discuss the reality of fairytales turning into horror stories after marriages and we get to see the girls driven and at their best.

But, things are soon tumultuous for Ma-ri’s husband, Nak-goo. We finally see that it is Go-eun with who Nak-goo is cheating on Ma-ri. The pictures she clicked in the hotel room with him becomes the bait for scandalous headlines and the man loses his job even. He also gets blackmailed by someone who demands 100 million won in cash to not leak more pictures of him and Go-eun.

 

Ma-ri discovers about the scandal while she rides the train and gets on a call with her daughter Su-ji while Nak-go is seen on a call with “bluebird”. Later we discover, that it is Jin-a who had sent Nak-goo the blackmail text. While she walks back home, she is almost attacked by someone.

In the hospital, Hee-so’s husband- Woo-bin, visits his mother and the husband-wife share a few words. Woo-bin initially discourages Hee-so to continue the process to get pregnant as it has been three years and it is expensive and tiring for her. When Hee-so does not agree, he reveals that he has gotten a vasectomy, which makes Hee-so extremely upset and angry.

Becoming Witch Episode 2 Ending

As the episode of Becoming Witch comes to an end, we see Nak-goo publically accept his affair and, Ma-ri finally getting a chance to kick him in the balls after agreeing to divorce him. Jin-a gets brutally attacked by the masked man and stabbed in the abdomen and is taken immediately to the hospital.

 

At Hee-so’s mother-in-law’s hospital, we see Hee-so lean in a ask her mother-in-law, how she would like to be killed. This clarifies the heartbreaking moment faced by Hee-so at the beginning of the episode.

The final act of the episode brings Ma-ri to the forefront, in front of the array of reporters who question her about Nak-goo. She publically claims to never divorce him and the entire episode’s plan comes undone: When Ma-ri saw Go-eun post the picture from the hotel, she was the one who leaked it to the press and asked Jin-a to blackmail Nak-goo for her. She also asked the divorce lawyer at the beginning of the episode to make sure they can never get divorced.

 

Becoming Witch Episode 2 Review

The second episode brings more comic elements to Becoming Witch but, no depth. Ma-ri is an interesting and clever character to rely on. However, Jin-a and Hee-so are not strong enough to pull the charm of Ma-ri throughout the show. The entire conspiracy was one of the highlights of this episode but, it does not do much to interest you, in general
