Who doesn’t love a walk in the rain? Okay, well, most of us. Being wet and cold sucks! But what about a K-drama walk in the rain? That’s a whole different story. In a K-drama, your umbrella is a perfect romantic haven just big enough for two. Who even cares about getting soaked when you’re silently staring into each other’s eyes? Not to mention, the blur effect from those raindrops is better than any Instagram filter.
Yep, it’s best to leave rain-soaked romance to the pros. Instead, let the rain pound on your window and get cozy on the couch with these adorable K-umbrella moments.
Warning: spoilers ahead!
1. “My ID Is Gangnam Beauty”
Sometimes getting rained on wakes you up to your true feelings. That’s certainly true for Mi Rae (Im Soo Hyang) – it’s after her first walk in the rain with Kyung Suk (Cha Eun Woo) that she realizes she can’t pretend he’s just a friend. Fittingly, it’s raining again when Kyung Suk finally gets it together and tells her that he likes her. But wait, does Mi Rae have the courage to return his feelings? Or is it raining on my face too?
2. “Shopping King Louie”
After a long, hard day at work, the last thing anyone wants is a long, hard walk home in the rain without an umbrella. If someone magically showed up to hold one over your head, you’d be giving them heart eyes no matter who it was. But when that someone turns out to be giant puppy Louie (Seo In Guk)? No wonder Bok Shil (Nam Ji Hyun) instantly melts into happy tears.
3. “I Am Not a Robot”
Here, the humble umbrella gets upgraded to a pivotal plot point. Ji Ah (Chae Soo Bin) was already crushing hard on Min Kyu (Yoo Seung Ho), even before she found out he’s one of the only people who ever bought the umbrella she designed. When he opens it above them on a sparkle-studded night, you can’t blame a fake robot for leaning into a kiss. But how will Min Kyu react when his mechanical pal puckers up?
4. “Romance Is a Bonus Book”
The Umbrella Moment isn’t reserved for main leads alone. Second lead Ji Seo Joon (Wi Ha Joon) gets a chance too, in the first episode of “Romance Is a Bonus Book.” He’s all set to be Prince Charming for our heroine Dan Yi (Lee Na Young), but the most charming thing about this scene is how it subverts our expectations. For Dan Yi, this isn’t a moment of romance but of realization: no matter how bad things get, she’ll always be able to rescue herself.
5. “Where Stars Land”
Confessing true love might be the last thing on your mind… but when you’re huddled under an umbrella on a rainy night, you might find the words just come spilling out. Even though he’s battered and bruised after a long day of secret superheroism, Soo Yeon (Lee Je Hoon) can’t help himself when Yeo Reum (Chae Soo Bin) just asks him straight out if he likes her. It’s so major that the rain actually stops right then, like “hold up, omg, what’s about to happen?”
6. “I Hear Your Voice”
In K-dramas, it’s usually the guy who chases after the girl to shelter her with his manly umbrella. In “I Hear Your Voice,” it’s Hye Sung (Lee Bo Young) who goes searching for Soo Ha (Lee Jong Suk) with her cute, patterned brolly in tow. I mean, she did just abandon him cruelly even though he has AMNESIA so it’s really fair enough. She doesn’t tell him in words but the umbrella says it all: “I totally love you back I am just pretending not to so please don’t die of pneumonia, okay?”
7. “The Legend of the Blue Sea”
This is perhaps the prettiest umbrella moment in a list full of pretty moments. How could it not be when you’ve got Jun Ji Hyun in a gorgeous sparkly dress and Lee Min Ho in a crisp linen suit? The stunning Spanish backdrop just adds to the sense of magic and mystery. As our mermaid heroine turns tilts her gaze towards her reluctant hero, you just know something wonderful is about to happen.
8. “Are You Human Too?”
The yellow umbrella in “Are You Human Too?” is actually a life-saver. Before Namshin III (Seo Kang Joon) holds it over So Bong’s (Gong Seung Yeon) head, we viewers are starting to wonder if we might actually just hate her for the drama’s whole run. Luckily, Shin’s sweet gesture marks a turning point for So Bong, who finally starts to see him as more than just a tin can. Let the feels begin!
