My Demon (2023) KDrama Episode 4

Dec 4, 2023

My Demon episode 4 picks up where we left off, with Do-hee proposing to Gu-won. Unfortunately, he turns her down, and she is shocked by his answer. Seok-hoon tries to step in, but Do-hee warns him to say nothing and starts walking away. Gu-won automatically follows, and she questions why he is doing so.

He responds that he is still her bodyguard and prefers to separate his work and private life. The shocked audience silently watches them leave the funeral while the paparazzi take photos.

Later, the family reunites in Cheon-sook’s office, and Su-ahn is losing it. She can’t believe her mom betrayed her and wants to invalidate the will. On the other hand, Suk-min says it would be useless to fight the inheritance. He tells his wife Se-ra that he will give his mom exactly what she asked for by playing hardball. He looks around and sees his mom’s eyeglasses.

This stirs up a memory from 12 years ago when his mom made him face the law after he hit a person while drunk driving. At the time, Cheon-sook begged for mercy but was shown none.

In the meantime, Do-gyeon smokes in Cheon-sook’s garden and intentionally steps on a butterfly. Symbolically, he is stepping all over Cheon-sook’s legacy and her wishes. Based on his facial expression, he seems to have hated Cheon-sook so much, but why?

Back to Do-hee and Gu-won, he drives her home. During the ride, Do-hee asks him to ignore the proposal, saying she is not serious. She likens the proposal to mere sleep-talking. She seems hurt that he turned her down but is trying to maintain her ego. However, Gu-won couldn’t care less about the proposal or its reasons. He doesn’t want to get married, and this attitude towards the proposal annoys Do-hee more.

She changes the topic and asks him to turn on the music, but all the songs are about proposals and marriages. She quickly orders him to turn it off. They soon arrive at her apartment building, and she says she won’t let the rejected proposal affect their business. Still, she seems pretty angry for someone who is “chill.” Gu-won tries to point this out, but she quickly walks away before he can complete his statement.

Before he leaves, he notices that she left Cheon-sook’s letter behind. He walks to her apartment to return the letter. He overhears her planning to tranquilise and drag him to a wedding venue. He reckons it is not the right time to show up at her place and quickly leaves.

Do-hee continues to rage until the doorbell disrupts her. It turns out to be Seok-hoon, who came to visit Do-hee out of concern. She tells him about the attempts on her life and her suspicion about why Cheon-sook was killed. Do-hee believes it is her fault because she alerted Cheon-sook to the trouble.

Seok-hoon explains that it is not her fault and promises to help her find the killer. He also asks if she plans to marry Gu-won. Do-hee clarifies that she will marry any man to take over as chairwoman and find the truth quickly. Seok-hoon offers to stay with Do-hee and protect her, but she asks him to leave. He agrees, only after adding himself as an emergency contact on her phone. After he leaves, Do-hee realises she is alone again for the first time in 17 years.

Elsewhere, Gu-won updates Bok-gyu about the latest happenings with Do-hee. Bok-gyu makes Gu-won watch the movie The Bodyguard and explains that the reel is turning into reality for him and Do-hee. Gu-won denies this, but Bok-gyu says it is bound to happen. He then tells Gu-won the three rules of being a bodyguard.

First, never let her out of your sight. Secondly, never stray from her and last but not least, never fall in love. Bok-gyu teases Gu-won, saying he is clueless about love and does not see the signs. Of course, Gu-won vehemently denies he is falling for a human being!

Meanwhile, Seok-hoon offers to stay with Do-hee and protect her, but she asks him to leave. He agrees only after adding himself as an emergency contact on her phone. After he leaves, Do-hee realises she is alone again for the first time in 17 years. She doesn’t get a chance to process her feelings as she gets notifications about the story of her rejected proposal going viral.

She immediately calls Gu-won, who is in a situation of his own with Ga-young. The latter is pissed to learn that Do-hee proposed to Gu-won. Nonetheless, Gu-won picks up the phone and goes to meet with Do-hee.

Do-hee is mad at him for turning her down and making her public ridicule. She demands an honest answer as to why he turned her down. Gu-won insists he wishes to stay single, and she says she feels the same. However, she feels embarrassed. Gu-won points out that she could have asked any man but asked him. He wants to know why she chose him.

Do-hee argues the proposal means nothing, and they bicker back and forth. Do-hee starts to stomp away furiously, and he offers to give her a ride, citing she can get attacked again.

Do-hee talks about her life and why humans feel sad during the ride. She thinks it is because most humans search for happiness when it is fake. She talks about her late parents and how she used work to avoid feeling sadness, guilt and self-pity. She soon falls asleep and he places Cheon-sook’s letter in her bag before waking her up. They say goodnight at her apartment door, and Gu-won asks her to call instead of going out again.

However, he adds that he would prefer not to be disturbed in the first place. Do-hee gets inside and adds him as an emergency contact on her phone.

She decides to read Cheon-sook’s letter, which makes her cry. In the letter, Cheon-sook explains her decision and apologises for leaving Do-hee to deal with the wolves. She also asks Do-hee to find someone to make her feel less lonely. She also urges Do-hee to give up if it gets too much and save herself.

The scene intercuts with Suk-min refusing to allow Do-hee to get a post-mortem on Cheon-sook’s body. Su-ahn slapping her and the cremation and burial of Cheon-sook. Do-hee vows to find the truth and honour Cheon-sook’s wishes.

Also in mourning is the mafia gang, who are finally laying their boss to rest. Their new leader is determined to find Gu-won and make him pay. Thanks to Gwang-chol’s secret interference, they learn more about Gu-won and where to find him.

Concurrently, after putting Cheon-sook to rest, Do-hee returns to work while Gu-won starts to remember more about his human life. He shares the memory with Bok-gyu, who offers to find out more. Bok-gyu is concerned since the return of the memories means that Gu-won is becoming human. This means he is no longer immortal, and Gu-won starts worrying excessively about ageing. He decides to stay closer to Do-hee to recharge.

Do-hee notices he is acting differently and is appalled to learn he is using her as a charger. She denies him the right to hold her hands. During the ride to work, they bicker about holding hands. The strange woman from episode 3 (from the police station scene) sees them again at a stop light and notes they seem happy. She then adds a cryptic message about how good times are short-lived. Who is this strange woman, and what does she know?

The employees try to boost their spirits at work, and Han Min-soo suggests a team dinner. Meanwhile, Do-hee asks Da-jeong to set her up on a blind date with the man she was supposed to meet on the first day. Da–jeong gladly agrees and informs Do-hee that she has secured the CCTV footage from Cheon-sook’s house. Do-hee recruits the help of a grumbling Gu-won to go through the footage. He suggests using his powers to find the killer.

Do-hee is offended that he had a solution this whole time and said nothing. However, Gu-won makes her promise to help him get his tattoo back after finding the killer. She also agrees to let him recharge anytime, anywhere he likes.

Sadly, Gu-won is unable to use his powers to locate the killer. To do this, he needs to recall the face of the person he wants to see. Since the killer was wearing a mask, Gu-won never saw his true face and, therefore, couldn’t locate him.

While trying to figure out if he lost his powers, Gu-won tried to locate Min-soo. They end up overhearing him talking to Choi Jung-mi and Lee Han-sung about how close Do-hee is to Gu-won.

As they are in a tight space, Gu-won and Do-hee stand too close to each other, unable to move. Do-hee starts getting uncomfortable as Min-soo explains the pros of office romance, speculating on the chemistry between their boss and her bodyguard. Do-hee accidentally moves, and the workers are startled by the noise. Thankfully, Gu-won uses his powers to teleport them outside. Later, Jung-mi suggests the employee have a team dinner party to welcome Gu-won.

Elsewhere, the man in a leather jacket visits Cheon-sook’s office and recalls their last conversation. Cheon-sook laments how the apple never falls far from the tree. Is this a hint that the mysterious man is Do-gyeon? We also see how he got access to Cheon-sook’s bag and altered her medications.

Unfortunately, Do-hee realises too late that someone got to the CCTV footage first. She also gets a call from Seok-hoon informing her that someone already cleaned Cheon-sook’s laptop. He invites her for dinner, but Gu-won interrupts and insists they have an earlier engagement. Is he starting to get jealous?

Do-hee and Gu-won go to the team dinner, and of course, everyone is uncomfortable having the boss there. On the other hand, Gu-won keeps trying to hold Do-hee’s hands, and Jung-mi is disappointed to witness this. Gu-won refuses to drink since he is still on the clock, but everyone else has a good time. Except for Do-hee, who tries to avoid Gu-won sneakingly hold her hand.

Min-soo asks why Gu-won turned Do-hee down, and Gu-won says he likes Do-hee. However, he adds that just because someone likes pork doesn’t mean they should marry a pig!

His answer pisses Do-hee, and rightfully so. This unsettling comment ends the night, and Do-hee furiously walks away. However, Gu-won fails to understand what he did wrong and insists on asking. Do-hee is too angry to explain, but when she starts to lash out, she turns and finds him gone. Gu-won walked away in anger. He ends up running into the mafia gang, who blame him for their boss’s death. A fight ensues, and Gu-won is hurt badly.

Do-hee tries to call him and walks around frantically, looking for him. She finds him about to be beaten to death and steps in. Gu-won is moved by her desire to protect him. She uses pepper spray to fight off the men and get to Gu-won. He grabs her arm and asks if she knows how to Tango. Do-hee is confused and asks why. Gu-won replies that in Tango, the partners have to trust each other. As this unfolds, a man takes pictures of Gu-won magically healing after grabbing Do-hee’s hands.

Gu-won uses his power to light up the street and make the mafia men dance to music. He and Do-hee start dancing, too, and another intriguing fight scene begins. This time, the Tango dance is incorporated into the fighting. It is impressive how they danced and fought simultaneously, making it look so good.

The episode ends with Do-hee and Gu-won coming to the end of their dance and Gu-won reciting the three rules of a bodyguard. Looking into Do-hee’s eyes while holding her so close, he wonders if he has fallen for her.

The Episode Review

This exciting episode kept us captivated as we learned more about different characters. I love that we get to see Do-hee remember his first human life. Hopefully, more memories will flood, and we can find out why he intensely hates humans. Was he betrayed? Was Do-hee in his first life, too? The questions about Gu-won’s existence are endless at this point.

In this episode, we saw Suk-min burn the letter left by his mom. We still don’t have any clue about the contents of the letter. What were Cheon-sook’s parting words to Suk-min? Did she hint at whether Do-gyeon was the mastermind of recent killings?

We would also like to know more about the strange woman who keeps talking about Gu-won and Do-hee’s fate. Who is she, and what is her role in their lives? However, we’ve got to shout out the actress in question. As always, Cha Chung-Hwa never disappoints.

Speaking of characters, we still don’t know much about Da-young. Every time she comes after Gu-won to explain why he is with Do-hee, it feels strange. Why is she acting like she owns Gu-won, and when will he clarify their relationship? At this point, her character feels unnecessary. Let us see if that will change in the upcoming episodes.
