You may spend a good portion of your drama-watching life wondering why the male lead has such a terrible bowl cut, or yawning at a female lead with the same old see-through bangs. But every once in a while there comes a character who truly knows the meaning of #hairgoals. Check out our pick of dramaland’s most glorious manes below!
Sunny in “Goblin”
Coppery gold is a difficult color to pull off, but Sunny (Yoo In Na) makes it look easy with every disgruntled toss of her head. We love the way her hair catches the light as it messily frames her face, giving her skin a little extra glow and her matching lip tint a little extra sass. There’s no way Reaper (Lee Dong Wook) wouldn’t be smitten, even if the Magical Granny of Destiny (Lee El) had nothing to do with it.
Soo Ho in “Hwarang”
There’s no shortage of luscious locks in your average sageuk, but Soo Ho (Choi Minho) brings a little something special to the table. This hwarang takes the crown for Best Accessories, thanks to his love of patterned headbands and beaded dangle earrings (taken off for battle, naturally). Side-swept bangs complete the look with a touch of rakish charm: exactly what we’d expect from Silla’s chic-est Flower Knight.
Yoon An Na in “Another Oh Hae Young”
Yoon An Na’s (Heo Young Ji) ever-changing hair is a perfect match for her moods. The effervescent girlfriend of our main lead’s little brother, An Na rocks lavender grey-gold waves as the drama begins, later switching it up to electric pink as her relationship starts to get a little crazy. Whether styled in space buns or elaborate French braids, An Na’s hair lets you know she’s not afraid to be herself, even if her boyfriend (Huh Jung Min) can’t deal.
Oska in “Secret Garden”
“Oska, the guy with the Ahjumma Bob?” We know what you’re thinking, but hear us out! Hallyu Legend Oska’s (Yoon Sang Hyun) bouncy ‘do is a breath of fresh air in a wasteland of idol coconut cuts. It’s a hairstyle you’re bound to remember, if only for it’s delightful cheesiness – just like the man himself! This look goes perfectly with a bedazzled jumper or an animal print scarf, which is great when you’re pretending to go incognito but secretly want everyone to notice you.
Shim Chung in “The Legend of the Blue Sea”
No list like this would be complete without the Patron Saint of Follicles herself, Shim Chung (Jun Ji Hyun). This actual mermaid’s literal mermaid hair is the pinnacle of “I Swam Up Like This” realness. She might have cake smeared all over her face or one hand in a fish tank foraging for lunch, but she still manages to look 10 times better than you or anyone else you’ve ever met in your life. Maybe it’s all that cod liver oil?
Ohn Joon Young in “The Third Charm”
Okay, so maybe “envy” isn’t the right word here. How about… admiration? It’s hard not to be impressed by a guy who confidently walks around with a corkscrew perm of this magnitude. It shouldn’t work, especially when you consider the glasses and the braces, but Ohn Joon Young somehow manages to pull it off. Then again, who are we kidding? This is Seo Kang Joon we’re talking about. Even if he sported a nest of hissing snakes for hair, the guy would still be pretty.
Kim Mi So in “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim”
For hair that radiates confidence, look no further than our favorite secretary, Kim Mi So (Park Min Young). Her iconic ponytail sums her up: classy, cute, and keeping it together. How does she manage to keep it so long with no frayed carpet split-ends? If expensive extensions are Mi So’s secret, we totally understand. It’s hard to find the time to do an oil mask when your cute boss (Park Seo Joon) keeps showing up for ramyun unannounced.
Kim Jin Hyuk in “Encounter”
This drama hasn’t even started yet, but it already features the most talked-about hairdo of 2018. Park Bo Gum‘s floaty, tousled bob is getting so much attention you could call it the second male lead. Do you love it or hate it? We’re firmly in the “love” camp, hoping that this fresh, unique look is the first sign of a fresh and uniquely charming character. Maybe it could start a trend? In fact, we’re calling it now. Comma hair is done, the pushed-back style is so cliché. 2019 will be the year of beachy man-waves!
