Episode 5 of The Kidnapping Day starts with Ro-hee waking up in a hospital where she is getting her MRI done under the observation of Dr Mo Eun-sun. From being put inside the MRI scanner, she suddenly gains some of her memories and remembers how her father, Dr Choi Jin-tae, conducted experiments on her.
After coming out of the scanner, Ro-hee asks for Myung-joon. Meanwhile, Myung-j00n wakes up injured in a safehouse that Eun-sun has kept them in. Ho-young takes Myung-joon to meet Eun-sun. He sees Ro-hee’s brain being examined and grows worried for the little girl. Eun-sun tells Myung-joon that this is quite normal for Ro-hee since she has an IQ of 200 and could possibly exceed the score as her brain has exceptional qualities.
Eun-sun tells Myung-j00n that Ro-hee’s memory loss is temporary and adds that she’ll soon regain her memories. On the other hand, Sang-yoon’s section chief scolds him for not following the orders of the Seoul Police Department. He calls Sang-yoon out for acting irrationally and making a public mockery of the cops by letting the kidnapper chase after Ro-hee.
Sung-yoon asks the chief to give him some time lest he worries that both the murder and the kidnapping case go cold. The chief gives him 2 days to find a new lead and the cop tries to find something. He joins Jeong-man and meets the priest who runs the orphanage where Myung-joon grew up.
At the same time, Eun-sun tells Myung-joon how Ro-hee is far more intelligent than one can imagine and that she has a photographic memory. Eun-sun also reveals that she’s paid off Hee-ae’s hospital bills and is willing to financially support Myung-joon because he’s made sure Ro-hee was safe in the past few days. The doctor reveals that since Ro-hee has started trusting Myung-joon, it was only best for them to slowly separate him from the little girl.
The cops arrive at the orphanage and learn that Myung-joon was a good person who had been tainted by an incident from 20 years ago. Despite not committing murder intentionally, Myung-joon pleaded guilty and served time for his mistake. The priest tells Sung-yoon that Myung-joon has restarted his life after he married Hye-eun, who also grew up in the same orphanage.
The cops leave with more questions as compared to when they arrived. Sung-yoon asks Jeong-man to look through Myung-joon’s burner phone and try to find Hye-eun. The duo then visit a former nurse at Dr Choi’s hospital who knew about the incident involving Ro-hee’s grandfather and Park Cheol-won.
On the other hand, Myung-joon is concerned after seeing Ro-hee being used for Eun-sun’s and other greedy investors’ selfish motives. That day, Myung-joon notices Ro-hee being a lot more glum. When Ro-hee insists that Myung-joon make her something to eat despite the buffet of professionally made food on the table.
Myung-joon makes Ro-hee the same flour pancakes as he did in the past and makes meat wraps for her to enjoy. Ro-hee tells him that she is okay with the fact that he is going to go away, leaving her behind. She also reveals that she was regaining most of her memories but had no recollection of what happened on the night of her father’s murder.
Ro-hee says that she no longer wants to avenge her parents because she remembers how they treated her. At the police station, Ju-hyeok wonders why Sung-yoon was not able to cooperate with the Seoul police department. He is shocked to learn that the cop had gotten into a physical altercation with his colleagues when he learned that they were corrupt during his time working with the Seoul Police Department.
Sung-yoon and Jeon-man meet the nurse and learn how Cheol-man, the CCTV salesman, tried to kill Dr Choi’s daughter with a knife after the death of his wife and unborn child. The nurse reveals that Dr Choi was overbooked and had to ask a contract surgeon to operate on Cheol-man’s wife which resulted in her death.
Sung-yoon states that the nurse had gotten it wrong as Dr Choi only had a single child – Jin-tae who was now deceased. The nurse is sure that Dr. Choi had a daughter because she remembers braiding the little girl’s hair. The cops sense something fishy but conclude that Cheol-man had agreed to reach a settlement because he had injured Dr Choi’s daughter who was missing.
Rookie cop Ju-hyeok tells Sang-yoon that Dr Choi registered the name of his son, Jin-tae, in their family registry 2 years following the incident of Cheol-man stabbing his daughter. The cops also discover that on the night of the murder, Hye-eun had participated in an unknown clinical trial.
Later that day, Hye-eun shows up to check up on Hee-ae and leaves soon after. Meanwhile, Myung-joon forces Ro-hee to go out and play by the beach with him and after a lot of pestering, he manages to take Ro-hee outside. Ro-hee tells him that this is her first time touching the sea and adds that she’s liking the experience.
The two play in the water for a bit and then sit by the beach. Ro-hee tells Myung-joon that Eun-sun was being nice to them because she had ulterior motives. Since Eun-sun’s daughter has a developmental disorder, she’s interested in the research with hopes of helping her child’s health improve.
Ro-hee says that she was participating in the study because she knew that if the research failed, Eun-sun would kick them out as they would no longer be useful to them. Ro-hee finally tells Myung-joon that if she were to ever lose her memory again, she would rather he not tell her who she was or anything about the experiments.
Eun-sun notices Myung-joon and Ro-hee growing close and asks Ho-young to make preparations to send him away. On the other hand, Sung-yoon and Jeong-man meet Cheol-man and ask him about the incident from 30 years ago. Cheol-man reveals that since he had made a mistake which led to the suffering of a little girl, he had promptly made a settlement with Dr Choi.
On the ride back to the station, the cops get a call about a dead body being found in Myung-joon’s locality. The cops discover the scrap collector’s dead body and learn that the murder had been committed by a professional. Eun-sun talks to someone on the phone and tells them that “Jayden” is coming to Korea to take Ro-hee with him. She tells the person on the other line that she wants to protect Ro-hee because the girl is her investment.
Myung-joon shows up at Eun-sun’s cabin and expresses his interest in wanting to see his daughter one last time before leaving the country. Eun-sun promises to make some arrangements to help.
Once the cops are back at the station, the nurse from Dr. Choi’s hospital shows up to make another revelation to Sung-yoon. She tells the cop that the knife used by Cheol-won contains the blood of an AIDS patient. She recalls that since Dr. Choi is very particular regarding his reputation, he had thrown a hissy fit upon learning that a patient with AIDS had been operated on in his hospital on the same day as Cheol-won’s wife.
Seeing his reaction, Cheol-won had taken some of the blood from the patient on a knife and was attempting to stab Dr Choi with it and had accidentally stabbed his daughter with it. The nurse claims that the girl was named Hye-eun, which leaves Sung-yoon shocked after he puts two and two together. The cops try to look through the records at the orphanage in order to find a connection between Hye-eun and Dr. Choi.
Eun-sun calls the nurse at the children’s hospital to make arrangements for Myung-joon to see Hee-ae. Ro-hee ends up looking through news pieces about her parent’s death and tries to remember what happened that night. She suddenly recalls seeing yellow siren lights on the car and is sure that someone from the CCTV company is the culprit.
Myung-joon tells her that they need to flee and go to the cops, as the police were not involved in the matter contrary to what they initially believed. Ro-hee starts to think about the probable ways for them to escape. Since they’re by the beach, she’s sure Eun-sun would send Myung-joon away in a boat. She asks him to bribe the rider with some of the money and turn the boat around so that Myung-joon can pick Ro-hee.
That night, the cops wait outside Hye-eun’s house hoping to catch her. Myung-joon leaves as he had discussed with Ro-hee. He takes notice of the road on his way to the hospital where he meets Hee-ae. He breaks down upon seeing her which wakes Hee-ae up. The two chat for a bit and Hee-ae asks her father to stay with her until the surgery.
Myung-joon tells her that he is going to go away for a bit and promises to be back soon once he finishes his job. Hee-ae asks her father to bring her a gift. From the compensation money that Eun-sun gives Myung-joon, he asks Ho-young to buy a doll for Hee-ae. Myung-joon then boards the boat and tries to do as Ro-hee had asked him to.
At the same time, Eun-sun notices that Ro-hee has fled from the house. She takes the car and chases after the little girl but is not able to see much in the middle of the night. Myung-joon tries to bribe the sailor but is hit on the head and made unconscious by other thugs on the boat.
Ro-hee starts running towards the highway that she had asked Myung-joon to wait at. The episode ends with Ro-hee being stopped by a car, and out steps a man named Jayden.
In only 5 episodes, there is so much investment in Myung-joon and Ro-hee’s partnership that I find it rather odd for him to be emotional about Hee-ae. It may sound mean but many viewers would agree that the makers should have shown us more of Myung-joon with Hee-ae because viewers are starting to disconnect with her character.
With all of the revelations made in this episode, it is clear that Hye-eun is Dr. Choi’s daughter who was abandoned by her father because she was infected with HIV. It is also likely that Hye-eun is behind the murder of Jin-tae because she despised her brother for getting everything that she deserved.
We have so 7 more episodes left in the show and a new character has made an entry. I am really hoping he turns out to be one of the good guys considering Eun-sun’s reaction!
