Recap Korean Drama "Link: Eat, Love, Die" Episode 2

Jun 8, 2022

Link: Eat Love Kill (링크: 먹고 사랑하라 죽이게) is a fantasy-drama series directed by No Sang-hoon and starring Yeo Jin-goo and Mun Ka-young in lead roles. The series consists of 16 episodes and will be taking over tvN’s Monday and Tuesday 10.30 PM KST slot, previously occupied by Military Prosecutor Doberman. The series will air from June 06, 2022, to July 26, 2022. Eat Love Kill episode 2 has a runtime of 68 minutes.

Link: Eat Love Kill episode 2 starts with the life of being a twin – since Gye-hoon and Gye-young shared a strange connection, they were made to share a life that Gye-hoon was unhappy with when he was little. Of course, it’s definitely difficult sharing your younger sister’s feelings at all times. In the present, Gye-hoon, having felt Da-hyun’s fear and anxiety, looks around desperately to figure out what has happened to her.

Meanwhile, Min-jo and Won-tak wonder why Da-hyun had come to the station and he tells her that she’ll come back if she really needs to talk. Back at home, Da-hyun wonders how to get the refrigerator back from Gye-hoon before he figures out that there’s a dead body inside and while she’s hanging out outside Rose Restaurant, Gye-hoon spots her and comes outside.

Confused about what to do, she asks him whether he’s ok and he, also confused, asks her the same thing. A very frantic Da-hyun goes off after that into the restaurant, blabbering that she is jobless and has nothing to do anyway and whether he has had dinner. Gye-hoon and Jin-hoo wonder whether she has come to say hi at 2 am and she tries to stall them saying the most random things. It’s actually funny and concerning in equal measure and Gye-hoon asks her what’s going on since she’s acting very suspicious.

He presses her further, asking her whether something happened just a while back and just as the fridge door is about to open, Da-hyun pushes Gye-hoon and pins him to the fridge door, closing it shut but giving birth to a very awkward situation. In a fit of craziness, she tells him that she likes him. Later on, Gye-hoon wonders what will happen if, by a 0.01% chance, Da-hyun is his sister – what will he do then? Meanwhile, Da-hyun wonders about the mess that she has landed herself in.

As she discusses the next steps with her family, her grandmother goes off with a baton and breaks the restaurant window, waking up the entire neighbourhood. Before they can do something, though, the police get there and their plan, which was stupid, to begin with, is foiled. As a dejected Da-hyun cries, Gye-hoon, too, starts to cry.

The next morning, Da-hyun overhears her mother and grandmother discussing how they will stop Gye-hoon from opening the fridge – at any cost. The discussion concerns Da-hyun, who asks her whether they have gone through anything similar in the past and they share a look that says a lot. And since bad things seem to just follow the family around, they find out that the CCTV camera outside their house is getting fixed as well.

However, Da-hyun’s odd behaviour has Gye-hoon concerned – he doesn’t think she’s sane and Jin-hoo agrees with her. I don’t blame either of them, considering the way Da-hyun acts around him. The two are later ambushed by her parents in the market and invited to a party at their restaurant. At lunch, Da-hyun’s mother tries different ways to get the fridge from Gye-hoon but fails miserably. At the end of a very awkward time, he calls their food bland and inedible, leaving Bok-hee fuming.

Either way, when the police arrive at the restaurant to ask Da-hyun why she was at the station, Gye-hoon saves her from the police and takes her outside. In his restaurant, Gye-hoon tries to hold her hand, in an effort to see something and she instinctively moves it away. Concerned, he asks her what happened the other night and asks her who did this to her. She tries to blow off the question with a “what does it matter to you” reply but he gets angry and repeats the question.

We next see her in the hospital where Gye-hoon has taken her to be checked out. Although her arm is fine, the doctors further test her for the bruise on her rib. A concerned Gye-hoon continues to ask her who did this to her and to leave or tell the police – whoever it may be doesn’t matter. However, she doesn’t have anyone to report since, well, he’s dead. Gye-hoon uses this opportunity to ask her since when she’s been living in Jihwa-dong but she doesn’t go too in-depth, leaving Gye-hoon wondering.

The next few days, Da-hyun spends Googling what would be the plus points of turning herself in to the police. Although the conclusion she draws is vague, Da-hyun does spend a moment outside the police station wondering what to do. Her behaviour doesn’t go unnoticed by the police, who become more suspicious as the days go on. Things don’t look up for Da-hyun either after she gets a delivery of the things that Jin-geun had given her back at her flat.

As Gye-hoon tries to find her throughout the city, feeling an urgency, Da-hyun too goes through something traumatic after realising that she is a survivor of stalking. That night, when Da-hyun comes back home, she finds out that her mother has decided to turn herself in to the police. In a written letter, she tells her daughter that she loves her and that she was the one who killed the guy. Shocked, Da-hyun runs to the police station sobbing. In the police station, it turns out that both Bok-hee and her mother have come to turn themselves in.

Shocked by what is happening, Bok-hee lies to the police that her mother is dreaming about killing her husband, remembering the times that he used to beat her. And takes her home before either of them can turn themselves in. They later agree to never try something like this again and that if this happened again in the future, she’d still choose the same path. As the police start to grow suspicious of Da-hyun and Gye-hoon, Gye-hoon convinces Da-hyun to play rock-paper-scissors with him and, surprisingly, he is able to figure out every one of her moves.

Although it doesn’t mean anything to Da-hyun, Gye-hoon realises for sure that it is her with whom she has made a link – all of his emotions are coming from her. On the other hand, Jung-ho realises who Gye-hoon really is. In between his conversations with Jung-ho and that with his mother, we see a side of Gye-hoon’s life that is neither fun nor great. If anything, it feels extremely heartbreaking and claustrophobic. That night, Da-hyun gets into the restaurant using Gye-hoon’s birth date and opens the freezer, only for Gye-hoon to ask her whether she found what she was looking for.

Link: Eat Love Kill Episode 2 Review

Link: Eat Love Kill continues to dapple with the dead body while also giving us some comedy and the hints of a mystery. I must say that I am a little confused with the direction that the series is taking. It’s obviously a mystery but does it have anything to do with Gye-young’s death? Is Gye-young even dead? These obviously are questions that the series will answer over the course of its runtime, but considering this is the second episode, it kind of feels a bit all over the place.

I find this especially interesting to note when there’s humour in the scene. For example, the restaurant scene at Da-hyun’s feels extremely forced and a bit cringy and I don’t understand the meaning behind it. The need to instil humour in a few serious scenes also feels unnecessary. The series, as a whole, is extremely serious and deals with some very difficult subject matters. But right now, I feel like it’s pulling me every which way and I can’t make up my mind regarding which way I should look.

Another plot point that has me extremely confused is that between Da-hyun and Gye-hoon. that’s probably the point right now, but the fact that there might be a romance between two people who might just be siblings is abhorrent to me. I really don’t want to believe that Da-hyun has been brought up in the same neighbourhood as Gye-hoon without anyone ever knowing, considering how small towns are always in each other’s business. I hope they don’t go that route, but we will have to wait and watch to know the truth.

I am guessing things will clear up a bit after a few more episodes when the series and the audience have both found a rhythm. But for right now, Link: Eat Love Kill will need to really get on with what it wants to present itself as.
