Episode 15 of My Happy Ending starts with a flashback of Jae-won’s childhood. She tells Chang-suk how she felt her life was worthless and how she dreams of living a happy life in the future.
The episode moves back to the present day where Jae-won is being interrogated by the prosecutor in the courtroom. Chang-suk blames himself for what was happening to Jae-won and yells that he killed Jae-won’s mother to save Jae-won the trouble of talking about her mental health. Jae-won is shocked and Chang-suk’s lawyer defends his client’s statement.
The lawyer states that the comment has been made to protect Jae-won. Jae-won tries to take charge of the situation and claims that suffering from mental illness is not a crime. Jae-won tells the court that she was actively getting help for her condition and asks the court to consider her statement.
The court is adjourned and Jae-won discusses the next step in the case with Chang-suk’s lawyer. She recalls her conversation with Tae-joo when the latter had agreed to testify in court if Jae-won could protect him from being arrested for Soon-young’s murder. Jae-won tells Tae-oh that she does not trust Tae-joo but decides to keep him as an option.
Meanwhile, Yoon-jin is upset about Jae-won’s testimony in court. She is annoyed about the fact that Jae-won is getting sympathy for her mental illness. Yoon-jin meets Yoon-jae and asks him to take care of Tae-joo. She then sees a photo of Ah-rin on social media and claims that she is soon going to meet “her daughter”.
At the same time, Ah-rin tells Yoon-jin that she is preparing to come back to South Korea soon. Jae-won meets Chang-suk in prison and tells him she is actively ready to fight her mental health struggles. Chang-suk blames himself for what Jae-won is going through but she reassures her step-father that he was the reason she was alive.
Tae-oh asks Jae-won to drop by at his studio while she drives back from the prison. Meanwhile, Yoon-jae shows up to kill Tae-joo. He strikes him with a knife and leaves Tae-joo’s bleeding body to drown in the lake. Yoon-jae tells Yoon-jin that he has successfully killed Tae-joo and she rejoices. The next day, Tae-oh and Jae-won are concerned about Tae-joo not being able to make it to the hearing but Yoon-jin looks cheerful.
The doctor who had treated Jae-won’s mother testifies in court and gives his testimony in Chang-suk’s favour. However, during cross-examination, the prosecution tries to prove Chang-suk’s guilt. The court orders for Tae-joo to sit as a witness and to Yoon-jin’s surprise, he shows up in court. A flashback shows Tae-joo swimming out of the lake after only being stabbed through his wallet.
Once inside the courtroom, the judge allows Tae-joo to testify even though he is being investigated for Seung-kyu’s murder. Tae-joo’s testimony helps Chang-suk’s case as he confesses how Jae-won’s mother had tried to end her life by drinking the pesticide to manipulate Chang-suk into giving her mother.
The testimony helps Chang-suk drastically and he receives a suspended sentence and is found not guilty of Jae-won’s mother’s death. Detective Oh arrests Tae-joo for Seung-kyu’s murder as per their premediated deal. Yoon-jin feels defeated and gets upset upon hearing the judgement. On her way out, Yoon-jin meets Tae-joo who was held in a cell nearby.
Tae-joo asks Yoon-jin to arrange 1 billion won in exchange for the original video of her killing Soon-young. Meanwhile, Tae-oh and Jae-won celebrate Chang-suk’s release with some drinks at his house. Chang-suk forces Tae-oh to drink more, leaving him drunk by the end of the night. Jae-won offers to buy some hangover medicine to help Tae-oh feel better and borrows his wallet.
She finds her old nametag attached to the wallet and asks Tae-oh how he found it. Tae-oh finally comes clean to Jae-won and reminds her how she had saved his life when he was 8 years old. Jae-won is surprised that Tae-oh had already met her twice in the past without her recognising him. Tae-oh confesses that he has fallen in love with her during both those incidents, leaving Jae-won surprised.
The next day, Jae-won threatens to expose Yoon-jin and sends her a screenshot of the video of Soon-young’s murder. Yoon-jin panics and shows up at the site, worried that Jae-won will soon expose her. Jae-won states that she is hoping for Yoon-jin to come to her senses before she takes the video to the cops. On the ride back, Jae-won recalls how good of a friend Yoon-jin was to her when they were kids.
Meanwhile, Tae-oh shows up at Jae-won’s house and cleans up the place, getting rid of all the trash for her. Jae-won comes back home and is surprised to see it rid of the mess it had been in since Soon—young’s death. She thanks Tae-oh for cleaning up the place. At the same time, Tae-joo is rushed to the hospital after he starts foaming at the mouth in prison.
Yoon-jin blames Yoon-jae for not finishing the job and slaps him. She recalls how she was turning into her father and apologises to Yoon-jae for acting out. The next day, she resigns from her job as the CEO of Dereve. On the other hand, Tae-joo wakes up in the hospital and manages to sneak out by knocking out the cop on duty.
As it turns out, Jae-won had made a deal with Detective Oh and Detective Lee who had helped Tae-joo in escaping from prison. Tae-joo calls Yoon-jin and asks her to show up at the docks with 1 billion won in exchange for the original video file. Detective Oh drives Tae-joo to the location where he waits for Yoon-jin.
After exchanging the cash for the video file, Tae-joo tries to get Yoon-jin to confess her involvement in Seung-kyu’s death. Yoon-jin states that she had killed Seung-kyu because he continued to sing Jae-won’s praises. Yoon-jin asks Yoon-jae to kill Tae-joo and Detective Oh, Tae-oh and Jae-won who were listening to the conversation from the phone rush to save him.
Yoon-jin notices the cop and flees in her car. Meanwhile, Detective Oh arrests Yoon-jae with Tae-joo’s help. Jae-won meets Tae-joo and tells him she had made a deal with Detective Oh and adds that he will be freed from prison due to his help with the case. The next day, news about Yoon-jin’s involvement in the murders of Soon-young and Seung-kyu spread all over the news.
Meanwhile, Jae-won resumes working as the joint CEO of Dereve and the employees are happy again. The company flourishes under Jae-won’s leadership and Tae-oh praises her for being so good at managing work as well as her mental health now. Tae-oh and Jae-won discuss the fact that Ah-rin was returning from the USA all by herself.
However, on the drive to the airport, Jae-won realises that Yoon-jin is going to go after Ah-rin as she is the only thing in her life that Yoon-jin never had. Tae-oh calls Jae-won to tell her that the information about Ah-rin returning to South Korea was on Rachel’s social media profile which further scares her.
The episode ends with Yoon-jin meeting Ah-rin at the airport and taking her along with her while Jae-won rushes to the airport worried about her daughter.
No matter how hard Jae-won tries to escape the drama, the drama won’t let her escape. I cannot comprehend how she thought it was a good idea to let Ah-rin travel alone. I am sure Soon-young would never let that happen which makes me miss him all the more.
Not only that but given the circumstances that Ah-rin was sent to the States, who thought it was okay to have critical details about her flight and her return to be posted on Instagram? The writers were only trying to instigate more drama as the show has seemingly run its course with all loose threads being tied together.
As terrifying a hitman as Yoon-jae was, I would never trust him to handle my murders for me. He just assumed that Tae-joo had died without verifying that detail. Did he forget that Tae-joo was a cop?
Seeing how things have progressed in the show, I wish that Reporter Choi is also punished for how he hounded Jae-won and possibly ruined her life just because she was a popular businesswoman.
With one episode remaining, I have no hopes for Soon-young to be alive but we can only pray he returns because he was a very good father to Ah-rin.
