On November 8, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) held a general meeting.
Mnet’s “Idol School” and SBS Biz’s “Live Live Economics, Information Talk Talk” received fines from the KCSC.
“Idol School” was under fire for arbitrarily changing the method of calculating viewers’ votes over nine episodes in order to manipulate the ranking results and which contestants were eliminated. The “Idol School” producers have also received criminal indictments and sentences over the case.
“Live Live Economics, Information Talk Talk” was under fire for having broadcast false information with people who were impersonating farm owners and various experts. Newstapa had previously reported that in this case, the reporters had appeared in their own broadcast in order to create a false story.
The exact amount of the fine will be determined in the next general meeting after considering the exact details, content, duration, and number of violations involved.
The KCSC also issued warnings in 42 cases of home shopping channels and other similar content that misled viewers.
Both fines and warnings are reflected in the KCSC’s broadcasting evaluation reports and can be used as evidence when it comes to renewing and approving broadcasters’ licenses.
