On October 8, Ilgan Sports reported that MBC will be discontinuing weekend dramas and restarting Monday-Tuesday dramas instead.
A source from the drama department said, “As planned, MBC will discontinue weekend dramas in March of next year. Instead, they’ll restart the Monday-Tuesday dramas which were temporarily suspended after ‘Welcome 2 Life.'”
MBC reportedly contemplated over the revival of Monday-Tuesday dramas versus the establishment of Friday-Saturday dramas. Despite rumors of a stronger possibility for Friday-Saturday dramas, the network is said to have chosen to restart its Monday-Tuesday dramas. Co-produced by MBC and HB Entertainment, “365: A Year Against Destiny” (literal title) was recently confirmed to premiere in March 2020. This upcoming series will be directed by producing director Kim Kyung Hee of “Lucky Romance.”
MBC temporarily suspended Monday-Tuesday dramas for the first time in 30 years after the end of “Welcome 2 Life” which concluded on September 24. With the exception of “Golden Garden” which is currently on air, there are no other dramas planned for broadcast after “No Second Chance” (literal title).
Financial problems are the biggest factors for this tight fiscal policy. With a reported expected deficit of around 90 billion to 100 billion won (approximately $75 million to $83 million), MBC is said to have begun tightening its finances because of the high production cost of dramas and high damages in the case of poor results.
According to Ilgan Sports, MBC will continue airing its dramas in the Wednesday-Thursday and weekend formats this year, and it will only have Monday-Tuesday dramas and Wednesday-Thursday mini series starting March 2020.
In response to the reports, a source from MBC told StarNews, “Nothing has been officially confirmed.”
