Every family has troubles of their own, but Kim San Ha (Hwang In Youp) and Kang Hae Jun (Bae Hyeon Seong) have been facing very particular struggles in the latest episodes of “Family by Choice.” From petty little arguments to real dramatic confrontations, these brothers have been dealing with a lot, something that puts Yoon Ju Won (Jung Chaeyeon) in a tight spot as well. And while some of those moments might have brought on the laughs, others were really heartbreaking. Here are some of the most important moments as of now.
Warning: spoilers from episodes 5-6 ahead!
Even if they’ve grown up as siblings, for Kim San Ha and Kang Hae Jun, their relationship with their mothers is completely different. While for San Ha his mother represents a toxic relationship, for Hae Jun, who is still waiting for his mother and misses her very much, seeing San Ha reject his mother is too hard to swallow. This brings conflict between the two, who, despite being kind-hearted and loving, are also quite strong-minded and stubborn. But part of having grown up together also means that they know how to pick a fight with each other. After all, that is what builds up a brotherhood for real.
However, none of that matters when it comes to Yoon Ju Won. She does her best to clear the air between them, from trying to coax them with food to taking them for a ride in order for them to make up. And even when none of that works, the moment they know she is in danger, they leave behind all their differences and run to her. After realizing that she has been sick, which they were unable to notice due to their quarrel, they decide to make a fake truce and pretend to be friends again, even if it’s just to make Ju Won happy.
Not too long ago Hae Jun had to deal with the sudden apparition of his estranged father, and now he has to face a new struggle. First is the presence of his aunt, who continues to push Hae Jun to be always mindful of his situation within Ju Won’s family. Although neither Ju Won nor her father has ever treated him as anything else than a real son and brother, the constant pressure from everybody, especially from his aunt, seems to be too much for them. It gets to the point when Yoon Jeong Jae (Choi Won Young) has enough and gives her a piece of his mind, making sure she understands that Hae Jun is his son and that everything he does for him is out of love.
But not even his father’s love can protect Hae Jun from the heartbreak of knowing that his mother has come back after so many years, only for her to leave without seeing him. It is still unknown why she decided to do this since she doesn’t seem to have any problem facing Yoon Jeong Jae or her sister. And now Hae Jun can’t even hold onto the promise she made once of coming back for him. It makes things even more painful knowing that she has paid not only the money she once borrowed from Ju Won’s father but also enough to cover the expenses for Hae Jun during the time he’s lived with them.
If we’re talking about a parent capable of breaking their son’s spirit, there’s no other like San Ha’s mother. She has been constantly showing the worst face of parenting throughout these episodes. Not only is she pushing her way into San Ha’s life despite him not wanting to have anything to do with her, but she is also terrible with her youngest daughter, using her as a tool to blackmail her son. Most importantly, she still blames San Ha for the terrible accident in which his late sister passed away, bringing back all the pain and guilt he has been silently carrying for so many years.
And again, San Ha’s father confronts his ex-wife, spitting to her face the hard truth: they were the ones who were responsible for the death of their daughter and let San Ha carry all the burden. Luckily, San Ha isn’t alone anymore, and even when he shuts down, avoids everyone, and gets sick in bed, his true family is there by his side. They prove once more that despite not sharing any kind of legal relation, they are each other’s safe place. In the end, San Ha gets a bit of healing when his father assures him that none of what happened was his fault, relieving that burden from his shoulders.
So far, the wholesome dynamic between the three teenagers hasn’t changed much. Despite San Ha and Hae Jun clearly having a soft spot for Ju Won, they still treat her as a younger sister. That is, until San Ha starts to realize that his heart is slowly pulling him in another direction. The moment he recalls every time she has been there for him since they met as children and how slowly she has grown in his heart, he gets confused as he still can’t figure out exactly what he is feeling for her.
San Ha struggles with this change in his heart, as he is now conscious of himself every time he is close to Ju Won, who is unaware of this. But he keeps one thing for certain: there is no other place where he belongs but by her side. But with the constant changes happening so suddenly in their lives, will this budding love be able to bloom before they have to separate? That’s what we will discover in the next episodes of “Family by Choice”!
