“The Secret Romantic Guesthouse” is getting into the thick of the plot!
Based on the hit web novel of the same name, SBS’s new drama is a new mystery romance about an unconventional boarding house and three students who stay there as lodgers. Shin Ye Eun stars as Yoon Dan Oh, the owner of boarding house Yihwawon, while Ryeoun, Kang Hoon, and Jung Gun Joo play three “flower scholars” who rent rooms—and are each hiding their own secrets.
But aside from these secrets, there are three more factors that compel viewers to stay tuned for more. Here’s a heads up on what to look forward to for the rest of the season!
“The Secret Romantic Guesthouse” has arrived in time for the blooming season, causing a stir in the hearts of many. The bold and independent female lead Yoon Dan Oh, together with the three “flower scholars” Kang San (Ryeoun), Kim Si Yeol (Kang Hoon), and Jung Yoo Ha (Jung Gun Joo), are so visually appeasing that it’s like they form a beautiful garden. Their beauty is enhanced by the style of cinematography as well. Already within the first episode, their individual charms have caught the attention of many and gave butterflies. As they become increasingly entangled by facing the crisis of the guesthouse together, it is expected that the romantic tension will only thicken.
The entirety of the cast, which includes Ahn Nae Sang, Oh Man Seok, Han Chae Ah, In Gyo Jin, Lee Mi Do, Lee Joon Hyuk, and Hyun Woo along with the aforementioned lead actors, has all devoted themselves to creating unforgettable characters. Shin Ye Eun’s portrayal of Yoon Dan Oh channels an unmatchable level of energy and vibrancy while Ryeoun’s portrayal of Kang San is the epitome of a stern Joseon man. Kang Hoon is the smoothest man on the block through his role Kim Si Yeol while Jung Gun Joo has become a figure with great attention to detail through his role Jung Yoo Ha.
The supporting cast is no different. We have Ahn Nae Sang keeping the pace as the mysterious first vice-premier Shin Won Ho, Oh Man Seok sharpening his knives with his revenge as Jang Tae Hwa, Han Chae Ah channeling charisma as a woman of steel, In Gyo Jin providing the element of comic relief as Yook Yook Ho, Lee Mi Do acting as the unofficial emotional guardian for everyone, Lee Joon Hyuk reaching the peak of foul and abominable behavior as the chief eunuch, and Hyun Woo hitting absolute rock bottom as tyrant Lee Chang.
While a sweet romance on the surface, “The Secret Romantic Guesthouse” also has an element of mystery. With mysterious clues tucked into the plot along the way, viewers are kept engrossed in the story. For additional context, the writers of the show are a powerful duo. Writer Kwon Eum Mi’s previous works include “General Hospital 2,” “Royal Family,” and “Gap Dong,” showing her versatility. Paired with writer Kim Ja Hyun’s relentless writing style, “The Secret Romantic Guesthouse” brings to the forefront both their strengths.
From the beginning, Yoon Dan Oh’s encounter with her guests Kang San, Kim Si Yeol, and Jung Yoo Ha leads to the gradual reveal of how they’re actually more interconnected than they thought. In episode 2, Yoon Dan Oh’s involvement with Jang Tae Hwa was depicted along with the secret behind the guesthouse and the suspicious behavior of the three “flower scholars.” Yoon Dan Oh is expected to join the mission to find the missing dethroned crown prince Lee Seol, which will add another layer of secrets and excitement.
The production team commented, “Episodes 1 and 2 of ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse’ are just the introduction to the expansive plain of stories. From episodes 3 and 4, we’ll get into the romance and mystery. We’ll build onto the story little by little, delivering thrilling fun and heartwarming reverberations. Please continue to look forward to it.”
